As many of you know, I love British programming, especially British comedies. Well Jen introduced me to The Vicar of Dibley and I’ve been hooked ever since.
It’s about a female vicar (preacher) that gets a new assignment to be the vicar of a small but beautiful village called Dibley somewhere in England. Now for some reason, practically every one there has a screw loose or two in the head, but not in a mean way…more like a “see a banana peel and swoosh, land on backside” type of way. Anyways you have to see it to understand. So she’s there and she soon becomes the heart of the village. Although technically the show goes on from 1994-2007, there was only a total of 24 episodes, so there’s not much to watch unfortunatelly.
The vicar is played by Dawn French of the power duo French and Saunders. You might have heard of these duo many times before because these two producers/writers/actresses have been very prolific and successful. Here in the United States most people would have heard of Jennifer Saunders, the creater of Absolutely Fabulous, who plays the character Edina. F.Y.I, the actress who plays Sarah on Ab Fab is Naoko Mori, who now plays Toshiko on Torchwood. Yes!
So anyways back to Vicar of Dibley, the show is awesome and has done exceedingly well back in England. I have heard that FOX network here in the US has tried to make an American version of the show starring Kirstie Alley. Based on what I was told, the pilot bombed. Truthfully, I’m torn about this. On one hand I’m glad they are leaving the origional alone, on the other hand, I would love to see more. I was also told that no new episodes of VOB will be made.
So last night, while having some exceedingly delicious cheese and wine (courtesy of Viv) we watched a few episodes of VOB. One in particular, The Handsome Stranger, was incredibly well made and funny. And there was this one song that really tied in the story. It’s called “It should have been me” by Yvonne Fair. I did some searching online and found a vid of the song with the bit from the show. Watch and enjoy, it’s terribly wicked! Cheers!!
